A couple of months ago, I saw a van drive by with the words “24 Hour Daycare” written on it. Although the van, itself, seemed a little shady looking with it’s hand painted signage and rusty exterior, the idea was ingenious! With today’s busy lifestyle and often non-traditional working hours, this is a service that a lot of working parents would appreciate. After doing a little digging, I found a few daycare services in Los Angeles that offer 24 hour care as well as other locations across the US.
Daycare has turned into Nightcare for many single parents.
CBS News’ The Early Show even did a story on the trend back in 2003. They found that 60 percent of all mothers with children under the age of six are employed, with a third of them claiming to work non-traditional hours because of childcare needs. Many parents (especially single parents) drop their children off with relatives or friends, but the uncertainty of sleeping in someone else’s bed, or sleeping on the couch or even the floor causes kids a lot of stress. The mother that they followed in the interview said her twin boys were much more at ease with the routine of staying overnight at the daycare three nights a week. They have their own beds there and they know what to expect. Better still is the fact that the daycare center is connected to the hospital (Medical City Dallas Hospital) where she works so she can check in on her sons whenever she needs to without leaving the building!
Currently, most 24 hour daycare centers run through large companies as a convenience to their employees, but the growing demand of these types of services will most likely widen the availability of 24/7 daycare in the years ahead.
